AI Data Use
Last updated: 2026-06-14
This page explains what happens when you use Linewright’s optional AI features.
Short version
Linewright’s local stencil workflow continues without AI, without a Linewright account, and without internet.
The beta may expose two signed-in AI lanes:
- AI Reference Analysis - an analysis-only route that can inspect a selected reference and return Clean or Generate recommendations.
- AI Quick Stencil - a credit-limited route that can create an AI Draft candidate from a selected reference.
Both AI lanes run only after an artist-controlled action and only when the backend feature flags for that lane are enabled.
AI Reference Analysis
AI Reference Analysis can send a reduced, metadata-stripped copy of a selected reference image plus bounded source diagnostics through Linewright’s backend proxy. It returns structured recommendations only.
AI Reference Analysis does not create an AI Draft, does not spend credits, and does not automatically start AI Quick Stencil.
AI Quick Stencil
AI Quick Stencil is a faster draft route for difficult source material.
It can help with sources such as:
- dense animal or fur references;
- portraits and realism references;
- shaded black-and-grey references;
- low-contrast sketches;
- compressed screenshots;
- colour illustrations where local extraction is noisy;
- degraded photos of existing tattoo work where the artist only needs a rough cleanup draft.
Every successful AI Quick Stencil run creates an AI Draft. An AI Draft is not automatically final. The tattooist must inspect, edit, size, and approve it through the normal Linewright workflow.
What gets sent
When you run an AI lane, Linewright may send:
- a reduced copy of the selected reference image;
- metadata stripped from that provider input image where technically possible;
- image dimensions or canvas dimensions;
- source quality, style, or prompt/profile information needed for the selected AI route;
- an AI run identifier for Quick Stencil;
- a credit quote or reservation identifier for Quick Stencil;
- provider routing information.
The provider request goes through Linewright’s backend. Provider API keys are server-side only and are not included in the iPad app.
What does not get sent
Linewright does not send these through the beta AI lanes:
- body photos;
- client-private material;
- client identity;
- full project history;
- project IDs;
- hosted review links;
- hosted review assets;
- editable stencil session history;
- undo/redo state;
- local project notes;
- placement recipes;
- local evidence packs;
- deterministic candidate snapshots as provider control images in the production AI Quick Stencil lane.
Do not choose body photos, private client material, confidential material, or images you do not have permission to process with an AI provider.
Current provider routes
The beta may use one of the enabled AI image provider routes, depending on backend flags and the selected AI option.
Current possible provider families are:
- Google image generation;
- OpenAI image generation;
- xAI image generation.
The app may show task or detail labels rather than provider company names in the studio workflow. Backend feature flags decide which provider routes are available for a given build.
What is stored
Linewright may store:
- AI run records;
- quote and credit ledger records;
- provider/model/cost metadata;
- run status;
- first client-result status, such as usable, blocked, or discarded;
- raw provider output temporarily in private storage so a paid Quick Stencil run can be recovered after a dropped response.
Linewright does not store the selected AI source image as a hosted project asset in the beta.
AI Draft candidates are saved locally on your iPad as part of the stencil session, like other stencil candidates.
Credits and charges
AI Quick Stencil is credit-limited.
A provider run may cost 1 or 2 standard AI credits depending on the selected route. Switching between local views derived from the same AI output does not create another provider call or another credit charge.
Retries for the same durable run should recover the existing run or output instead of charging twice.
In beta, provider errors, backend validation blocks, and local validation blocks should not be treated as successful paid stencil output.
AI Reference Analysis does not spend credits.
Safety boundary
Linewright AI is not intended for:
- body photos;
- client-private material;
- confidential client designs;
- material you do not have permission to process;
- client-facing generation;
- public sharing;
- exact-copy work where the artist needs guaranteed reproduction.
For exact-copy flash, lettering, dates, logos, geometry, mandalas, and client-supplied designs, use local tools where exact reproduction matters.
Local alternative
You can use the local route instead of AI.
The local route can prepare, edit, size, tile, mirror, and export stencil output on the iPad without a Linewright account and without internet.
Tester rules
For the beta:
- use synthetic, licensed, or artist-owned non-private references;
- do not use body photos;
- do not use private client material;
- check every AI Draft before editing or printing;
- compare AI output against the original source and local deterministic candidates;
- report whether the AI draft would actually save cleanup time.
